Step 7 - Kill the infections

One of the most effective ways of killing Lyme disease and other infections is by using antibiotic IV therapy or antibiotics in general and if that’s the path you decide to take then use our list of recommended private doctors who can prescribe antibiotics. However, you can treat Lyme disease using natural, herbal remedies that when combined with a lifestyle overhaul and adequate supplementation can be very effective. Any treatment should start with a low small dose to gauge any adverse reaction and then tolerance should be built up from there. If you experience a flare up of symptoms when starting treatment than you should pause treatment and allow your body time to recuperate before resuming treatment again.

It goes without saying that antibiotics are a very effective way of treating Lyme disease. I started my treatment using antibiotics and they did give me a sense of normalcy after a rather horrid period of being incredibly sick. Despite hitting multiple combinations of antibiotics, I didn’t achieve total remission. So even though antibiotics are a fast and effective way of treating Lyme and co-infections there are natural herbs and medicines that can be as effective over a longer period of time and you don’t need a doctor to sign off on them. What’s more, natural medicines won’t kill off healthy good bacteria in your gut in which 80% of your immune system is based. If you pursue the antibiotic route an experienced Lyme doctor won’t prescribe you just one type of antibiotic, you can expect to be taking anything from two to even five different types of antibiotics. There are three known forms of Lyme disease, the spirochete, cyst and biofilm forms. Some antibiotics are only effective against the spirochete form, some the cyst and some the biofilm. This is why you need to take multiple antibiotics at the same time. Doxycycline for example which is prescribed on the NHS for Lyme is only effective against the spirochete form. Depending on what coinfections you have the doctor may also need to prescribe you an antibiotic that targets parasitic infections. Different antibiotics have been shown to be effective against different coinfections.

    The Buhner Protocol

Stephen Buhner is a world-renowned herbalist and comes from a long line of healers. His core protocol for Lyme uses three herbs and has five key philosophy points. Firstly, to support collagen within the body, restore and support the immune system, reduce inflammation, treat the symptoms and then finally kill the bacteria. The core protocol is as follows.

    1. Japanese knotweed root (Polygonum cuspidatum)
Powder: 1 tsp – 1 TBS of the root powder 3x daily. Start at the lower dose and work up, OR . . .
      Tincture:¼ – 1 tsp 3-6x daily, OR . . .
Tablets (Green Dragon Botanicals):These are normally labeled as resveratrolon the bottle. They are in fact knotweed root standardized for resveratrol content. (Note: Don’t use grape resveratrol; it won’t work very well.) Some comments on tablet dosages below:
    1. Cat’s claw bark (Uncaria tomentosa)
      Powder:1 tsp 3x daily, OR . . .
      Tincture:¼ – ½ tsp 3x daily, OR . . .
      Tablets/capsules (Green Dragon Botanicals): 1–4 500 mg tablets/capsules 3x day.
    1. Andrographis (Andrographis paniculata)
Capsules: Begin with a small dose and work up. I would recommend 600 mg (1 capsule) 3x daily to begin with, for one week. Then, if there are no side effects, increase the dose to 2 capsules 3x daily. Please check the side effects on this herb:Unpleasant allergic reactions can occur.
    1. If you have neuroborrelliosis, add: Gou-Teng (Uncaria rhynchophylla)
Tincture:½ – 1 tsp 3–6x daily, depending on severity of brain infection.
    1. Collagen support protocols (see book) are often essential, as well.

The protocol above is his basic Lyme disease protocol which is effective for about 75% of patients depending on what coinfections of Lyme disease you have. However, in his book Healing Lyme he has a more expanded protocol to help treat Lyme and specifically target other co-infections. If you decide to do this protocol then I highly recommend buying his book.

    The Cowden Protocol

The Cowden protocol is a holistic and multifaceted approach to tackling Lyme Disease using powerful anti-microbials that address all forms of Lyme. It was developed by cardiologist called Dr Lee Cowden and Nutrimedix. It’s a do it yourself Lyme protocol that addresses infections, detoxification, brain support, nervous system, liver, kidneys, immune support, heavy metal removal and energy support. Basically, it’s an all singing, all dancing protocol and if you decide to try it then you won’t have to worry about all those other supplements. Dr Cowden recommends staying with the protocol two months past your last symptom. If you need to stay on the protocol beyond 9 months then Dr Cowden recommends repeating month seven, eight and nine until the patient feels better. You can order the programme month by month via Rio health. The packages are expensive but you have to take into account the money you are saving by not buying other supplements.

    Biocidin LSF

Biocidin LSF is a blend of natural herbs that is an excellent complement to any Lyme disease antibiotic or herbal regimen. According to laboratory experiments Biocidin may decrease and eliminate biofilms for Lyme, yeast and a variety of other bacteria. It may eliminate or decrease all forms of Lyme including spirochete, cyst and biofilm forms. It decreases drug resistance in Lyme by blocking efflux pumps that remove antibiotics from germs. It decreases symptoms of SIBO, small intestine bacterial overgrowth and may also support treatment of intestinal parasites. It’s an all singing all dancing Lyme disease supplement and will make a great addition to anyone’s protocol. Unfortunately there’s no UK suppliers but this seller ships to the UK from the United States.

    Grapefruit Seed Extract

Grapefruit seed extract or GSE is an ideal thing to take alongside doxycycline. The reason is that GSE can kill the bio-film form of Lyme disease which doxycycline can’t, it’s a very powerful natural antibiotic. I recommend starting off with a couple of drops in your water to gauge your body’s reaction and avoid a herxheimer reaction. You can build up your tolerance and slowly increase the number of drops from there on in.

    Allicin Max

Garlic has been used as a medicine since the beginning of recorded time but the active ingredient in garlic, allicin is a powerful antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and antiparasitic. It is complex to harvest allicin from fresh garlic as allicin is the smell you get when you crush fresh garlic and as you can imagine conventionally that smell dissipates quite quickly. However, through a proprietary process, it is possible to stabilize allicin and yield nearly 100% of its potency. This is great news for Lyme patients who have noted significant benefit and studies have shown that its quite effective against multiple species of the coinfection Babesia.

Dr Hulda Clark Natural Parasite Cleanse

Intestinal parasites can do major damage in the human body. A lot of individuals who are struggling to get well have a lingering infection involving some type of parasite. Parasites are hard to eradicate as they have a long reproduction cycle and are clever at avoiding detection. Luckily, Dr Hulda Clark has come up with a remarkable protocol to help eradicate these worms. Even though many herbs have anti-parasitic properties Dr Clark discovered that three herbs alone can rid you of over 100 types of parasites, these herbs are Black Walnut, Wormwood and Cloves. For anyone suffering with Lyme and co-infections there’s no doubt that they will also be suffering from parasitic infections as well and adding these three herbs to your protocol could make the world of difference.

    Black Seed Oil

This seed oil has been labelled “the cure for all diseases except death” and has been used in various medicinal practises across the world for treating and preventing an extensive range of illnesses including cancer, asthma, liver diseases, arthritis, gastrointestinal problems and numerous other health disorders. A key component of black seed oil is thymoquinone which has demonstrated antioxidant properties that help relieve inflammation. Importantly for Lyme patients Black seed oil has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties in fact there’s promising research connecting Nigella sativa (the flowering plant black seed oil is extracted from) to multi drug resistant bacteria. Which means Nigella sativa could be the answer to the emergence of new superbugs.  Many Lyme patients report strong herx reactions after taking this oil so it’s important to consume toxin binding agents as well.
